No matter which Lake Louise accommodations you decide to stay at, you are never far from some of the most impressive views of any mountain region in the world. Whether you prefer to hike or ski through the mountains or simply take in the views from a sightseeing gondola or from comfort of your own vehicle, the sheer beauty of the Canadian Rockies is ever present.
Lake Louise HikingSome of the best hiking in the whole of the Canadian Rockies can be found in the Lake Louise area, with trails ranging from easy walks around Lake Louise to steep climbs up to high mountain passes or scrambles to awe-inspiring peaks as well as everything in between. Being located in Banff National Park, the extensive trail system is well maintained by Parks Canada, and even in the middle of summer, crowds are not really a problem. The Plain of Six Glaciers hike is strongly recommended which offers amazing views of Lake Louise as well as the magnificent glaciers beyond and at the end of the trail you can reward yourself with a well deserved pot of tea and lunch at the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse. Another teahouse and more lake views can be found on the Lake Agnes trail, and the easy Lake Louise Lakeshore trail will suit those looking for more of a stroll than a hike. Other world class hikes close to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake include Paradise Valley, Larch Valley and Wenkchamna Pass and a list of Lake Louise hiking trails and maps can be found on the Parks Canada website. |
Lake Louise Ski ResortThe Lake Louise Ski Area is the largest ski resort in the Canadian Rockies, offering over 4000 skiable acres and 139 named runs with a good mixture of green, blue and black runs to suit all ability levels. There is a green run coming down from every chairlift, meaning that novice skiers and snowboarders can explore a wide area without leaving their comfort zone. Intermediate skiers and riders will love the long blue runs, perfect for high speed cruising, while advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders have plenty of terrain to challenge them ranging from steep chutes and powder bowls to gladed tree runs and moguls. Often voted North America’s most scenic resort, the views in all directions are stunning, and the ample supply of lodges and mountain restaurants means that you are never very far from a place to refuel! |
Guided Hiking and SnowshoeingGreat Divide Nature Interpretation offer guided hiking and snowshoeing trips in Lake Louise and throughout Banff and Yoho National Parks. Both half day and full day hiking trips run daily from early June to late September, while half day snowshoeing tours can be booked from late December to late March. The interpretive guides have a wealth of experience in the Canadian Rockies and have won several awards for their services. |
The Icefields ParkwayKnown as one of the most scenic drives in North America, the Icefields Parkway connects Lake Louise with the Canadian Rockies town of Jasper, in Jasper National Park. The journey will take you past pristine mountain lakes, impressive rocky peaks and of course mile upon mile of glistening glaciers. The views along this route are quite simply out of this world and there is ample opportunity to stop at the many viewpoints and take photos. The full length of the Icefields Parkway is 230km and many people choose to stay in a hotel in Jasper rather than complete the return journey to Lake Louise in one day. You can of course turn around at any point and the trip would still be worthwhile, as impressive glacier views can already be seen within a short half hour drive of Lake Louise. |
Lake Louise GondolaThe Lake Louise sightseeing gondola is located at the Lake Louise Ski Area, just a 5 minute drive from the village. The 14 minute gondola ride is a relaxing way to take in the surrounding mountain views before getting at out an elevation of 2088m where you will be treated to unrivalled views of the surrounding peaks, glaciers and across the valley to Lake Louise. Depending on the time of year, alpine wildflowers and wildlife can also be seen. The sightseeing gondola operates from mid May to late September. |
